Today I have my first attempt at Vanessa Chan’s (The Pudgy Rabbit anyone? Yep, I adore that blog too!) “Ostrich” pattern from her AMAZING BOOK, “Happy-Gurumi: 20 Super Cute Amigurumi Toys to Crochet”! You can pick it up on Amazon in either Digital or Print format. It’s definitely a must-have for all you amigurumi crochet lovers!
My Amigurumi History
I picked up “Happy-Gurumi” awhile back at my local Barnes & Noble to test my abilities of the ways of Amigurumi. I quickly learned that Amigurumi wasn’t quite for me. When I began learning to crochet it was a way of overcoming and handling severe depression and panic attacks. Several years down the road now, I still just really enjoy coming home from work, popping my rear end up and binge watching something reaaaallll good! (Oscar was conceived through the binge-watching goodness of Riverdale).
Round Numero 2
I decided to give Amigurumi another try just recently and I’m really glad I did! ONE SIMPLE THING THAT SAVED ME was the way I was holding my crochet hook. It honestly never had occurred to me there were different ways to hold a hook (Duh, Cassie! I know….) I was just holding the hook how it felt comfortable (like a pencil). I tried switching over to the “Knife Method” as I was working on really tight and small rounds and it made a massive difference. It definitely felt awkward at first, but after my first project it honestly felt pretty normal switching back and forth between the two methods.
Meet Oscar!
Anyways, on to this adorable creature! I dubbed him Oscar as the pattern just labeled him as an Ostrich. I felt like he deserved a dignified name, so Oscar it was! This little guy is mischievous, but not quite the smartest bird in the bunch! He’s a total diva though and loves to shake a tail feather!

Oscar’s Innards
Since I’m a poor post-grad student, I hardly ever use the same yarn stated in patterns, so Oscar was created with Big Twist Yarn in Creme, Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Soft White, Lt. Pink & Dark Brown (these were given to me and they were so old the yarn brand isn’t produced anymore unfortunately), but this Dk Brown Tweed Yarn and Pink would work as well! I picked up the black safety eyes at Hobby Lobby pretty cheap.
