Today I bring you a step-by-step tutorial for a simple “Circle to Square” Granny Square.
This is an easy and pretty common granny square that any beginner should be able to try out with ease. I personally love the transformation turning the circle into a square so quick. The images are taken as part of a project that I am currently working on, so stay tuned and I’ll post images of the final project soon!
*EDIT: I have finished the final project, and you can view the Baby Blanket HERE.
What You Will Need:
• 2 different colors of yarn (I’m using an aqua-blue for the circle and grey for the square)
• Recommended hook for the yarn you’ve chosen to use (I used a H – 5.00mm hook)
• Scissors
• Yarn Needle (I use a metal one, but any will do!)
Abbreviations:
(I linked how-to videos from my favorite youtube channel, Crochet Guru, if you don’t know certain stitches)
ch = chain
ss = slip stitch
dc = double crochet
st ch = stitch chain
st = stitch
hdc = half double crochet
sc = single crochet
Instructions:
(I have tried my best to include end-of-round images while working through one of the granny squares to help you along!)
Using your circle color (I will be using an aqua-blue color), begin with a magic circle, or ch 4 and join the last chain using a ss to the first chain to make a loop.

Round 1:
ch 3 (st ch, also counts as your first dc), 11 dc in the circle you just made, join with a ss to the 3rd ch of the st ch.
(12 sts total)

Round 2:
ch 3 (st ch, also counts as first dc), dc in the same space as ss, 2 dc in the next 11 sts, join with a ss to the 3rd chain of the st ch.
(24 sts total)

Round 3:
ch 3 (st ch, also counts as first dc), dc in the same space as ss, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat *to* 10 times, dc in last st, join with a ss to the 3rd chain of the st ch. Tie off yarn. Weave in your ends.
(36 sts total)

Round 4:
Attach your second color to any st.
ch 3 (st ch, also your first dc), dc in the same st, *dc in next st, hdc in the next two sts, sc in the next two sts, hdc in the next two sts, dc in the next st** , (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next st*, repeat from *to* twice, repeat *to** once, 2 dc in the same space you started the round in, ch 2, join with a ss in the 3rd ch in the st ch.
(60 sts total – you should have 9 sts for each side and 2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc (6 sts total) for each corner)

Round 5:
ch 3 (st ch, counts as first dc), *dc in the next 12 sts**, (dc, ch 2, dc) in the corner*, repeat *to* twice, then repeat *to** once, dc in the corner, ch 2. Join with a ss to the 3rd ch in the st ch. Cut off and weave in tails and edges.
(64 sts total – you should have 12 sts for each side and 1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc (4 sts total) for each corner)

You are done!
