Have you ever seen a blanket that used multiple granny squares to make one big granny square? Well today, I have a step-by-step tutorial for the Off-Centered Granny Square that does just that! Need help with the basic stitches, check out this Basic Granny Square pattern first!

This Granny Square is super easy and simple for any beginner crocheter and will make the perfect next project for any advanced crocheter! Make a bunch of these and flip and turn them to create even bigger granny squares and fun patterns for blankets.

What You Will Need:

• 3 different colored yarns (any type or weight is fine, but know the finished product will look different. I will be using Medium Weight Yarn in Dark Denim (I Love This Yarn by Yarn Bee), Soft Grey Mix (Caron One Pound Yarn) and White (I Love This Yarn! by Yarn Bee)
• Recommended hook size for the yarn you are using (I will be using a 5.50mm (I) crochet hook)
• Pair of scissors
• Yarn Needle (I use a metal yarn needle, but any yarn needle will work)

Abbreviations:

• ch = chain
• ss = slip stitch
• st = stitch
• dc = double crochet
• sp = space
• st ch = stitch chain

Instructions:

*Make note of the difference in rounds & rows in this tutorial. Only the first and last row are worked as a round, the rest are interpreted as rows as you won’t crochet them all the way around the granny square.

Foundation

Using your first color (I am using Dark Denim).
Ch 4 and join with a ss to the first st to form a ring.
(4 sts total)

Round 1:

Using the same color as your foundation chain, Ch 5 (st ch, counts as your first dc and ch 2),
[3 dc into the foundation ring, ch 2], repeat this 2 more times.
2 dc into ring, join with a ss to the third ch of st ch. Tie off yarn.
(22 sts total)

Row 2:

Using your second color (I am using White), join yarn to any ch-2 sp from the previous round.
Ch 2 (st ch, counts as first dc), 2 dc in same ch-2 sp as your ch-2, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the next ch-2 sp of previous round (this will be a corner), ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-2 sp, turn.
(17 sts total)

Row 3:

Using the same color as row 2, ch 3 (st ch, counts as your first dc and ch 1).
3 dc in ch-1 sp of previous row, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in ch-2 sp of previous row (this will make your second corner), ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp of previous row, ch 1, 1 dc in last st, turn.
(21 sts total)

Row 4:

Using same color as the last two rows (this will also be the last row you use this color on), ch 2 (st ch, counts as first dc).
2 dc in same ch-1 sp as your ch-2, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner ch-2 sp of previous row,
*[ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp]* repeat from *to* once more. Tie off yarn or attach your third color of yarn that you will use in the next row.
(25 sts total)

Row 5:

Using your third color (I am using a Soft Grey Mix), Ch 3 (st ch, counts as first dc and ch 1).
[3 dc in ch 1-sp, ch 1] repeat brackets once more, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner ch-2 sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp] repeat brackets once more, ch 1, 1 dc in last st. Turn.
(29 sts total)

Row 6:

Using the same color as row 5, ch 2 (st ch, counts as first dc).
2 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, [3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1] repeat brackets twice total, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner ch-2 sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp] repeat brackets three times total. Turn.

Row 7:

Using the same color as the last two rows, ch 3 (st ch, counts as your first dc and ch 1).
[3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1] repeat brackets three times total, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner ch-2 sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp] repeat brackets three times total, ch 1, 1 dc on last st. Turn.
Note: If wanted, you can leave off the final round (which is more of a border) to combine four of these granny squares to make one giant granny square. Simply leave off the last round and tie off your yarn, weaving in loose ends.
(37 sts total)

Round 8:

Continue with the same color yarn as the last 3 rows.
Ch 2 (st ch, counts as first dc), 3 dc in ch-1 sp,
*[ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp] repeat brackets 3 times total, ch 1, 7 dc in corner ch-2 sp.* Repeat from *to* twice more.
ch 1, 3 dc in ch-2 sp, [ch 1, 3 dc around post of dc at end of row] repeat 3 times.
Join with a ss to top of ch-2. Tie off and weave in loose ends.
